Wheelchair-Accessible Minibus Charter
This vehicle brings a lift or ramp plus restraint points for wheelchairs. Layouts vary a lot from one minibus to the next, so the details you send decide which one the operator offers.
Layouts and seats
There is no standard seat count. Each wheelchair position takes the place of seats, so a vehicle carrying three chairs seats fewer people than one carrying one. Luggage room also shrinks. Send the number of wheelchair users, the number of seated passengers and any mobility equipment.
These vehicles suit day programs, aged-care outings, accessible airport and cruise transfers and mixed-mobility groups. The driver holds an LR licence, the class for buses seating over 12 adults with a GVM no higher than 8 t.

Rules that apply
Under the national Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport, a bus or coach is covered while it runs a public transport service; whether a private charter falls in is not settled. In NSW, each wheelchair in an accessible booked vehicle needs a space of at least 1,300 mm by 800 mm and 1,500 mm high, and the driver must be able to load and transport wheelchair passengers competently.
Booking one
Accessible minibuses are fewer than standard ones, so ask early. We pass the needs to partner operators and confirm only a vehicle an operator has confirmed. Ask whether it has a lift or a ramp, and check the maximum size and weight of chair it takes if a passenger uses a large powered chair.
Questions
Will an accessible minibus always be available?
No. Availability depends on the operators in each area and the date. We confirm a vehicle only once an operator has confirmed it.
How many wheelchairs can one minibus take?
It depends on the layout. Tell us how many wheelchair users are travelling and the operator offers a vehicle with enough restraint positions, if one is available.
Can carers and family travel in the same vehicle?
Usually, if there are enough seats left after the wheelchair positions. Give the full passenger list so the layout fits.
