Cairns Coach Charter for Reef, Rainforest and Tablelands
From Cairns most group days head north or up the range. A coach does the road sections, and the day itself is shaped by the cableway, the railway, the reef boats and the river ferry.
Up to Kuranda one way, down the other
Skyrail and the Kuranda Scenic Railway can be booked one way each. The coach drops the group at the start and meets them at the finish, so nobody retraces the same route. Skyrail's base is at Smithfield, 15 minutes' drive north of the city centre, with parking for oversized vehicles; the railway leaves from Cairns or Freshwater station.
The cableway ride, with stops at Red Peak and Barron Falls, lasts around an hour and a half. Fix the coach's collection time from the ride bookings, not from a guess.

North across the Daintree
The Daintree River ferry runs from 5 am to midnight and carries about 27 cars at a time. School holidays bring long queues. Tourism buses may use the priority lane, staffed through peak season between 9 am and 4.30 pm. Tides and the river level sometimes interrupt service, so look up the ferry's latest update that morning.
Visits to Mossman Gorge start at the Mossman Gorge Centre, which has its own car park; a shuttle bus goes from there into the gorge while the coach waits. Tours into the Daintree or Barron Gorge parks run under a QPWS commercial permit.

Coach rules in Cairns
- Cairns Airport (CNS) is about 7 km by road to City Place, about 10-15 min in light traffic.
- There are no toll roads in Far North Queensland; Queensland's toll roads are all in the south-east of the state.
- Daintree River ferry: on Cape Tribulation Road about 50 km north of Port Douglas, running daily from 5 am to midnight; the crossing takes about 15 minutes including loading, and the ferry carries about 27 standard vehicles.
- At the Daintree ferry, long queues are common in school holidays; tourism bus operators may use the priority lane, which is managed from 9 am to 4.30 pm in peak season. River and tidal conditions can affect operations, so check the ferry status updates before travelling.
- Mossman Gorge is 77 km north of Cairns and 20 km north of Port Douglas; the Mossman Gorge Centre is the gateway, with on-site parking and a shuttle service into the gorge.
- Skyrail's Smithfield terminal (6 Skyrail Drive) is about 15 min north of Cairns City and 50 min south of Port Douglas, with parking for oversized vehicles; one way takes about 1.5 h including the Red Peak and Barron Falls stops.
- Skyrail and the Kuranda Scenic Railway (37 km, 15 tunnels and 55 bridges, from Cairns or Freshwater station) can be combined one way each, so the coach drops at one end and collects at the other.
- Commercial tours in Queensland national parks, including Daintree and Barron Gorge, need a Commercial Activity Permit from the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service.
Reef boats and the northern beaches
Boats for the outer reef and for Green and Fitzroy islands all sail from the Reef Fleet Terminal. For a group staying in Palm Cove or Port Douglas, a coach meeting the morning check-in time is simpler than several taxis. Port Douglas is about an hour away.
Flying in
City Place is roughly 7 km from the terminals, a 10 to 15 minute run outside busy times. Licensed operators load in commercial zones at each terminal, T1 International and T2 Domestic; the public zones outside are for immediate pick-up only. There are no toll roads in Far North Queensland, and Queensland does not change its clocks for daylight saving.
Questions
Can a coach cross on the Daintree ferry?
Yes. Tourism buses can use the priority lane at managed times. Allow about 15 minutes for the crossing, including loading.
How long is a Cape Tribulation day?
About 2.5 hours each way from Cairns, including the ferry. Starting from Port Douglas shortens it.
Is the Atherton Tablelands a day trip?
Yes. Atherton is about 1.5 hours up the range, which leaves time to explore and stop for lunch.
Do we need a large coach for reef transfers?
Not always. For a small group, a minibus reaches the terminal just as well; for a school group, one coach keeps everyone together at check-in.
