Coach Charter to Katoomba and the Blue Mountains
Most Blue Mountains groups want Echo Point, Scenic World and a stretch of cliff walk, all within a few kilometres of Katoomba. The rules on where a coach may stop are tighter than those short distances suggest.
Echo Point: no drop-offs in the roundabout
Council cameras at the Echo Point roundabout record vehicles stopping in No Stopping zones to let passengers on or off, and that includes buses. The driver cannot pull up there and unload. Regulated pay-parking bus zones exist, but their exact locations are not published, so set-down and parking are agreed before the coach arrives.
Parking meters take cards or the PayStay app, not coins. Council is also preparing a visitor bus management plan that may bring a bus booking system and set coach routes. Check for new rules before each season.

Scenic World and the cliff walks
At Scenic World the multi-storey car park is limited to 2 m clearance, which rules out any coach. Set-down is on Violet Street, arranged with the attraction. The cliff-top walks link Katoomba, Leura and Wentworth Falls, so the coach can drop the group at one end and meet it at another.

Coach rules in Blue Mountains
- Sydney Airport is about 110 km by road (about 1.5-2 h). Western Sydney International Airport at Badgerys Creek, about 13 km south of Penrith, is due to start scheduled passenger flights on 25 October 2026 and will be the closest airport.
- Echo Point: Blue Mountains City Council uses compliance cameras at the Echo Point roundabout that detect vehicles stopping in No Stopping zones to drop off or pick up passengers, including buses setting down visitors in the roundabout. Agree coach set-down and parking before arrival.
- Visitor pay parking applies in Katoomba, Leura, Wentworth Falls and Blackheath town centres and at key sites including Echo Point, Katoomba Falls, Gordon Falls, Sublime Point and Lincolns Rock, with regulated pay-parking bus zones; meters take cards only (no coins) or the PayStay app.
- Council is preparing a Citywide Visitor Bus Management Plan, including a proposed bus booking system and designated coach routes and parking; check for new coach rules before each season.
- Scenic World's free multi-storey car park has a 2 m height clearance, so coaches cannot use it; plan set-down on Violet Street with the attraction.
- Jenolan Caves is closed while Transport for NSW repairs the Two Mile section of Jenolan Caves Road (closed since April 2024); reopening is planned for early 2027.
- The M4 is tolled only between Church Street, Parramatta and Haberfield (WestConnex); from Parramatta west to Glenbrook, where it becomes the Great Western Highway, it is toll-free. Coaches over 12.5 m long or 2.8 m high pay Class B tolls on Sydney toll roads.
- Roads and walks in the Blue Mountains can close for bushfire danger, storms or maintenance; check NSW National Parks alerts and Live Traffic NSW on the day.
Up from Sydney
Katoomba is about 100 km from the Sydney city centre, around an hour and a half via the M4 and the Great Western Highway. Tolls on the M4 apply only on the WestConnex stretch from Parramatta to Haberfield, and from Parramatta out to Glenbrook there is nothing to pay. Full-size coaches are charged the heavy-vehicle rate where tolls apply.
From Sydney Airport allow 1.5 to 2 hours for about 110 km. Once Western Sydney International at Badgerys Creek begins passenger flights, scheduled for late October 2026, it will be the closest airport to the mountains.
Fire, storms and closures
Bushfire danger, storms and maintenance work can all close roads and walking tracks. On the day, look at Live Traffic NSW and the NSW National Parks alerts before the coach leaves. Jenolan Caves stays shut while Transport for NSW repairs the road in, and is not due back until early 2027, so leave it off any program this year. Bathurst, about 1.25 to 1.5 hours further west, suits a longer day instead.
Questions
Is a Blue Mountains day trip from Sydney realistic for a school?
Yes. About three hours of the day is driving. Keep to two or three stops around Katoomba and Leura and the timetable holds.
Where can a group stay overnight?
Katoomba town centre, Echo Point and Cliff Drive, Leura, Blackheath and Medlow Bath, and Wentworth Falls. The resort at Leura and the Hydro Majestic at Medlow Bath both take conferences and events.
Is a smaller vehicle easier up there?
For 20 or fewer, yes. A midi coach or minibus sets down more easily in Leura and Blackheath, where town-centre parking is paid and busy.
