Cairns Airport coach and group transfers (CNS)

City Place is only about 7 km from the Cairns terminals. Most groups landing here are on their way to something else: the reef, Kuranda or Port Douglas. The transfer is the first leg of a busy day.

Commercial zones at both terminals

T1 International and T2 Domestic each have designated ground transport zones for commercial operators, buses included. To use them, an operator needs either the airport's Ground Access Licence or its express permission in writing. The public pick-up zones outside each terminal are for immediate loading, with no waiting, and the Standby Zone is for private cars. The coach loads in the commercial zone.

A group split between an international and a domestic flight comes out of different terminals. Choose one as the meeting point.

The first day

Reef trips leave from the Reef Fleet Terminal in the city. Skyrail starts at Smithfield, 15 minutes' drive north of Cairns City, where large vehicles can park. A common plan is Skyrail up to Kuranda and the Scenic Railway down, one way each, with the coach dropping at one end and collecting at the other.

If the group would rather skip the cableway, Kuranda is about 30 minutes by road. The Atherton Tablelands are about 1.5 hours, which suits a full day with a later flight home.

Where the driver meets you

  • Cairns Airport provides designated ground transport zones for commercial operators, including buses, limousines, rideshare and taxis, at both the T1 International and T2 Domestic terminals.

Where coaches wait

  • The airport does not publish a coach staging area; its free Standby Zone (up to 30 minutes, driver must stay with the vehicle) is for private vehicles waiting to collect passengers.

Drive to the CBD

  • about 7 km by road to City Place, about 10-15 min in light traffic

North to Port Douglas and the Daintree

Port Douglas is about an hour from Cairns, and Mossman Gorge about 1.25 hours, where visitors reach the gorge itself by shuttle from the visitor centre. About 1.5 hours north is the Daintree River, where the ferry takes around 27 cars at a time. In peak season tourism buses can use its priority lane between 9 am and 4.30 pm. River and tide conditions can stop it running; look at the ferry's status updates before setting off.

Far North Queensland has no toll roads. Commercial tours in the Daintree and Barron Gorge national parks require a QPWS Commercial Activity Permit.

Questions

Can the coach wait in the Standby Zone?

No, that is for private vehicles. The coach works from the commercial ground transport zone at your terminal and comes in when your flight is down.

We are only eight. Do we need a coach?

No. A minibus or large car suits eight people with bags, and it still uses the commercial zone.

Can we go straight from the airport to Palm Cove?

Yes. Palm Cove is a 25-minute drive from Cairns. Many groups stay there or in Port Douglas; send the hotel address with your request.
