Canberra Coach Charter for Schools and Groups
Most coach trips to Canberra are school tours with a tight program. The national institutions publish where buses set down, and the PACER rebate decides which of them the program must include.
Build the program around PACER
Schools that want the federal PACER rebate must fit in at least three of four set institutions: Parliament House and the Australian War Memorial, plus the Museum of Australian Democracy and the National Electoral Education Centre. Book those slots first. The coach timetable is then built around them, with the other galleries and Questacon fitted into the gaps.

Where the bus stops at each institution
The Memorial's Schools' entrance is a place to unload and load, not to park. What coach parking there is lies along Treloar Crescent, on its eastern side, and space is short. Before the visit, the Memorial sends out arrival instructions with a map; pass it on so the driver has it.
At the National Library the drop-off is right in front of the building, but there is no street parking for buses nearby. The coach moves on to the bus parking zones past Questacon while the group is inside. The two buildings are close, so one coach stop can serve both.

Coach rules in Canberra
- Canberra Airport (CBR) is about 8.5 km by road to Civic (City Walk), about 12-15 min in light traffic; the airport publishes no coach pick-up regime. Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport (SYD) is about 290 km away, about 3 h by road.
- The ACT has no toll roads.
- National Library of Australia: drop-off and pick-up zones for school and group buses are directly in front of the Library; there is no street parking for buses nearby, and bus parking zones are on the far side of the Questacon building.
- Australian War Memorial: limited bus and coach parking is on the eastern side of Treloar Crescent; the Schools' entrance is for drop-off and pick-up only, and the Memorial's school booking team sends arrival details and a map before the visit.
- School groups claiming the federal PACER rebate must visit at least three of the four mandatory institutions: Parliament House, the Museum of Australian Democracy, the National Electoral Education Centre and the Australian War Memorial.
- Floriade, Canberra's spring flower festival, is held each year in Commonwealth Park.
- Snowy Mountains trips: all two-wheel-drive vehicles in Kosciuszko National Park must carry snow chains between the June and October long weekends on Kosciuszko Road (to Perisher), Guthega Road, the Alpine Way between Thredbo and Tom Groggin, and Elliott Way and Selwyn Link Road.
Getting the group to Canberra
Canberra is about three hours from Sydney by road. Many interstate schools fly into Sydney and take a coach south, which makes day one a travel day. Under the Heavy Vehicle National Law a driver may work no more than 12 hours in any 24, so an arrival day with a full afternoon of visits may not fit. Keep the first afternoon light.
Civic is roughly 8.5 km by road from Canberra Airport, a trip of 12 to 15 minutes when traffic is light. The airport names no coach pick-up point. Agree a meeting spot with the operator. There are no toll roads in the ACT.
Spring flowers and snow trips
Floriade, the spring flower festival, is held in Commonwealth Park each year; if your dates overlap, it is an easy addition to the program. For Thredbo or Perisher, any 2WD vehicle on the main park roads, including the one up to Perisher and the Alpine Way beyond Thredbo, has to carry chains between the June and October long weekends. Jindabyne is a little over two hours from Canberra.
Questions
How many coach days does a Canberra school tour need?
Often three: a travel day and two days of visits. Tell us the booked session times and we plan the coach around them.
Can the coach stay with us all day?
On a full-day charter, yes. The coach moves between the drop-off point and the bus parking at each stop.
Is a winery afternoon possible?
Murrumbateman is about 35 minutes from the city and fits an adult group's free afternoon.
