Avalon Airport coach transfers for Geelong and Melbourne
Avalon lies between two cities. Before anything else, decide which way the group is heading. Geelong is the short run. Melbourne is about twice as far and has a heavy-vehicle toll on the way.
The Bus Zone
Avalon keeps a Bus Zone for vehicles that meet the definition of a bus in Victoria's Bus Safety Act. A coach may stay only as long as loading takes. The entry charge depends on how many passengers the vehicle can carry, is paid before it goes in, and is not refunded if nobody boards. A coach meeting a cancelled flight still pays.
For a large group or a charter tour, the operator agrees arrangements with the airport beforehand. Tell us early if a full coach-load is coming through Avalon, particularly on an evening arrival.

The Geelong side
It is about 24 km to Geelong City Hall. The Princes Freeway has no toll, and the run takes 25 to 30 minutes. Most hotels are near the waterfront. The National Wool Museum on Moorabool Street has bus parking at its front door, handy for a school group straight off the plane.
The Spirit of Tasmania sails from Corio Quay Road in North Geelong. Its ships are being replaced in late 2026. Check the sailing time before the coach from the airport to the quay is fixed.
Where the driver meets you
- Buses use the airport's Bus Zone, which is for buses (as defined in the Victorian Bus Safety Act 2009) only; a bus may stay only as long as needed to collect its passengers.
Where coaches wait
- Avalon does not publish a coach holding area; arrangements for collecting and dropping off larger groups and commercial charter tours are negotiated directly with the airport operator.
Drive to the CBD
- about 24 km by road to Geelong City Hall (about 56 km to Southern Cross Station, Melbourne), about 25-30 min to central Geelong; about 50 min to the Melbourne CBD
The Melbourne side
The airport reckons on roughly 50 minutes to the Melbourne CBD. On the West Gate Freeway, heavy vehicles, which includes buses with 13 or more seats, are tolled at a point between Millers and Williamstown roads whether they use the West Gate Tunnel or the bridge. There is no cash option.
Down the coast
Torquay, where the Great Ocean Road begins, is about 22 km from Geelong. A Twelve Apostles return from Geelong covers at least 400 km, and that distance must fit inside the driver's legal hours, which the Heavy Vehicle National Law sets. For a group landing at Avalon, a night on the coast often works better. Once the new Twelve Apostles visitor centre opens, visits to the main viewing area must be booked ahead.
Questions
Can a minibus use the Bus Zone?
The zone is for vehicles that are buses under Victorian law. Give us the numbers and the operator confirms where your vehicle loads.
Is there a public transport fallback?
Yes. Express buses are timed to the major flights and go to Werribee and Southern Cross Station. Route 18 connects the airport with Lara Station.
