Coach and Bus Charter in Geelong
Geelong is the base for three very different days: the Great Ocean Road, the Bellarine and the bay ferry, and the overnight ship to Tasmania. Each one has a fixed point to plan around, whether a booking, a sailing or the driver's hours.
Twelve Apostles: book the slot, then check the hours
A new Twelve Apostles visitor centre is due to open in October 2026. Once it opens, nobody visits the main precinct without a booking, and a tour group's booking comes with a bus bay and a fixed arrival time. Book the slot first and work the rest of the day backwards from it.
The Apostles are 200 to 230 km from Geelong, three hours or more each way, so a return day passes 400 km. That has to sit inside one driver's work and rest limits under the Heavy Vehicle National Law. If it does not, the answer is a second driver or a night on the coast. Lorne, about an hour and a quarter away, is a shorter coast day with no such problem.

The Bellarine and the Sorrento ferry
Allow about 35 minutes to reach Queenscliff. Car ferries to Sorrento leave on the hour between 7am and 6pm, the crossing is about 40 minutes, and vehicles check in 40 minutes ahead of sailing. Booking the coach's place is recommended on weekends and in school holidays.

Coach rules in Geelong
- Avalon Airport (AVV) is about 24 km by road from Geelong City Hall, about 25-30 min toll-free via the Princes Freeway; Melbourne Airport (Tullamarine) is about 85 km (about 1-1.25 h).
- Spirit of Tasmania sails to Devonport from Spirit of Tasmania Quay, 136 Corio Quay Road, North Geelong (since October 2022); crossings are overnight, roughly 9-11 h.
- Spirit of Tasmania changeover: the last sailings of Spirit of Tasmania I and II are on the night of 22 October 2026, there are no passenger crossings from 23 to 30 October, and Spirit of Tasmania IV and V start on 31 October 2026 with night sailings only at first. Group travel is booked through Spirit of Tasmania's group enquiries.
- Twelve Apostles: the new visitor centre is due to open in October 2026 (reported for 16 October); from then every visitor to the main precinct must book ahead, and the booking system gives tour operators a reserved bus bay and a set arrival time. Bookings open in early October 2026.
- A return coach day trip from Geelong to the Twelve Apostles is 400 km or more; plan it within the driver's work and rest hours under the Heavy Vehicle National Law, or build in an overnight stop.
- Searoad Ferries (Queenscliff-Sorrento) sail hourly 7am-6pm every day, taking about 40 min; vehicles check in 40 min before departure, and vehicle bookings are recommended on weekends and school holidays.
- Melbourne toll roads are cashless (Linkt). Buses with 13 or more seats are charged as heavy commercial vehicles, and since the West Gate Tunnel opened in December 2025 heavy vehicles pay a toll at a point on the West Gate Freeway between Millers and Williamstown roads whether they use the tunnel or the West Gate Bridge.
Spirit of Tasmania from Corio Quay
Sailings to Devonport depart North Geelong from Spirit of Tasmania Quay on Corio Quay Road and run overnight. The service is moving to new ships, and a new terminal at Devonport, in late 2026, with a break in passenger sailings during the changeover. Check sailing times before you fix travel dates. Group bookings go through the ferry's own group enquiries; we arrange the coach to and from the quay.
Airports and the road to Melbourne
From Avalon to Geelong City Hall is about 24 km: 25 to 30 minutes on the Princes Freeway, with no tolls. It has a Bus Zone, and pick-up arrangements for larger groups and charter tours are agreed with the airport operator directly. Melbourne's main airport at Tullamarine sits about 85 km away; budget 60 to 75 minutes.
Trips into or across Melbourne meet cashless tolls. Any bus of 13 seats or more is classed as a heavy commercial vehicle on those roads, and a heavy-vehicle toll point on the West Gate Freeway applies whether the coach uses the tunnel or the bridge.
Questions
Where does a coach set down for the National Wool Museum?
Out the front on Moorabool Street, where there is bus parking. The museum is one block from the waterfront, so a class can walk to Cunningham Pier and Eastern Beach and come back to the coach afterwards.
How far is Ballarat from Geelong?
About 87 km, roughly an hour. A Sovereign Hill day from Geelong is a straightforward return trip.
Is a minibus better for a Bellarine winery day?
For a small group, usually yes. A minibus or midi coach parks more readily at cellar doors and takes less deck space on the ferry.
