Perth Coach Charter, City to Coast

Perth has no toll roads and short runs to the airport, Fremantle and the Swan Valley. The catch is in the CBD, where buses are barred from loading zones, even for a moment to let people off.

No stopping in city loading zones

In the City of Perth, loading zones belong to goods vehicles. A coach may not pull into one even for a quick drop. Each hotel, venue and restaurant address therefore needs its own agreed stopping point, worked out before the day.

Fremantle is simpler. The City of Fremantle publishes a map of tour coach bays, some with time limits and some without, and Fremantle Prison has two coach bays directly outside and two more on Parry Street.

Check the terminal first

Perth Airport is really two airports: the T1/T2 precinct and the T3/T4 precinct, about ten minutes' drive apart. Each precinct has coach bays of its own, and a bus must use the zone for its size category. If half the group flies one airline and half another, they may land at different precincts. Check each airline's terminal before you book the pick-up.

From T1 it is about 17 km to Town Hall, from T3 about 13 km, and around 20 minutes in light traffic either way.

Airports serving Perth

  • Perth Airport (PER) — about 17 km by road from T1 (about 13 km from T3) to Perth Town Hall, about 20 min in light traffic; longer at peak times

  • RAC Arena — Perth Wildcats (NBL), concerts; west end of the CBD
  • HBF Park — Perth Glory (A-League), rugby

  • Nambung National Park (The Pinnacles) — about 200 km, about 2.5 h

Coach rules in Perth

  • Perth Airport (PER) is about 17 km by road from T1 (about 13 km from T3) to Perth Town Hall, about 20 min in light traffic and longer at peak times; Terminals 1 and 2 and Terminals 3 and 4 are separate precincts, linked by a terminal transfer bus.
  • Western Australia has no toll roads.
  • In the City of Perth, loading zones are for commercial goods vehicles only: taxis and buses may not stop in a loading zone, even briefly to load or unload passengers.
  • The City of Fremantle publishes a map of tour coach bays, some time-restricted and some with no time limit.
  • Fremantle Prison has two coach bays directly outside the prison and two more on Parry Street.
  • Rottnest Island is car-free: private vehicles cannot be taken to the island. Ferries run from Fremantle (about 25 min), Hillarys Boat Harbour (about 45 min) and Barrack Street Jetty in the CBD (about 90 min), so coaches set down and collect at the ferry terminals.
  • Nambung National Park (The Pinnacles) is a park where WA park entry applies; the Pinnacles Desert Discovery Centre is the visitor centre.

Rottnest by ferry

Private vehicles cannot go to Rottnest, so the coach drops and collects at the wharf. Fremantle is the short crossing at about 25 minutes; from Hillarys it is roughly three-quarters of an hour, and from the city's Barrack Street Jetty about an hour and a half. For a school group, the Fremantle sailing plus a short coach run from the city usually gives the most time on the island.

Long days inland and down south

Allow about 2.5 hours for the Pinnacles, north of the city; Margaret River is about three hours south, and Wave Rock about four hours east. A Wave Rock return means some eight hours at the wheel before anyone gets off to look. WA sits outside the national heavy-vehicle law and sets its own fatigue rules; the operator plans the driver's hours under them. On the longest trips expect a second driver or an overnight in the quote.

WA park entry applies at Nambung National Park, home of the Pinnacles.

Questions

Are there toll roads in Perth?

No. Western Australia has none, so tolls never appear in a Perth quote.

Is the Swan Valley a half-day trip?

Yes. It is about 25 km and 30 minutes from the city, so a morning or afternoon of tastings fits comfortably.

Can the coach meet a cruise ship at Fremantle?

Yes. Ships berth at the Fremantle Passenger Terminal or D Berth on Victoria Quay, close to the town centre. Give us the ship and date and we set a meeting point.
