Coach and Bus Charter in Townsville

Townsville is compact. The airport is close and the Strand is a short run from most hotels. The planning goes into the longer days: the island, the ranges and the drive north.

Stadium nights: vehicle size sets the plan

Vehicle size decides where you stop at the stadium in Railway Estate. A bus seating 22 or fewer is allowed into the Dean Street car park with no need to book, entering from Rooney Street, and the walk to Gate A is about 500 metres. Anything bigger uses the charter bus zone, also on Dean Street but on the Central Park side, roughly 400 metres from Gate A, and that bay has to be booked.

On major event days there is no public parking on site. A coach group needs its bay booked first, so give us the fixture date as early as you can.

Magnetic Island

Most groups cross as foot passengers, 20 minutes or so from the Breakwater terminal, then get around on island transport. A vehicle crossing means the car ferry that leaves Ross Street, South Townsville, takes around 40 minutes and must be booked. The operator confirms whether a minibus or coach can be carried.

Coach rules in Townsville

  • Townsville Airport (TSV) is at Garbutt, about 9 km by road from Flinders Street in the city centre (about 10-15 min in light traffic).
  • Queensland Country Bank Stadium: buses of up to 22 seats can drop off and pick up inside the Dean Street car park (entry from Rooney Street, about 500 m from Gate A, no booking); a charter bus parking zone on the Central Park side of Dean Street, about 400 m from Gate A, must be booked. There is no public parking on site on major event days.
  • Reef HQ, the Great Barrier Reef Aquarium, is closed for a full rebuild; the Reef Authority is working towards reopening in 2029.
  • Magnetic Island Ferries (vehicle ferry) sail from 42 Ross Street, South Townsville, taking about 40 min to Nelly Bay; vehicle bookings are essential, so confirm any coach or minibus crossing with the operator. Most groups cross on the passenger ferry and use island transport.
  • Wallaman Falls: signs on the access road from Ingham say it is unsuitable for trucks, buses, caravans and trailers; the final climb of about 15 km is steep and winding.
  • Mount Spec Road to Paluma is narrow, steep and without guard rails, and was closed by landslips after the 2025 wet season; check QLDTraffic and plan smaller vehicles.
  • Guided tours in Queensland national parks need a QPWS Commercial Activity Permit held by the tour operator.
  • Long runs such as Townsville-Cairns (about 350 km) must fit the driver's work and rest hours under the Heavy Vehicle National Law.

Range roads and what to leave out

Signs on the access road from Ingham say Wallaman Falls is unsuitable for buses, and the last climb of about 15 km is steep and winding. Leave it off a coach itinerary. Paluma needs care too: the road up Mount Spec is narrow and steep, without guard rails, and landslips shut it after the 2025 wet season. Sources differ on bus use, so the operator confirms, and a smaller vehicle is the likely answer.

Reef HQ is shut while it is rebuilt and is not expected back before 2029, so drop it from school programs for now.

The airport and the run to Cairns

The airport is at Garbutt, some 9 km from Flinders Street and a 10 to 15 minute drive. There is no published coach pick-up point: drivers use the signed public zone at the terminal and stay with the vehicle, and the airport's car parks are built for light vehicles, not coaches.

Cairns is about 350 km north. That drive has to fit the driver's work and rest hours set by the Heavy Vehicle National Law, so a group touring both cities needs proper breaks or a night between them.

Questions

Can a coach drive up Castle Hill?

Yes. There is coach parking at the summit lookout. The road has been open again since October 2025, after works to stabilise the slope. In the warmer months an early morning or late afternoon visit is cooler for the group.

What changes in the wet season?

Heavy rain can close roads in the ranges, as it did at Paluma in 2025. Check QLDTraffic the day before, keep an indoor option such as the Museum of Tropical Queensland, and make sure everyone carries water.

Is Charters Towers a day trip by coach?

Yes. It is about 136 km each way, 90 to 105 minutes on the road, which leaves most of the day in town.
