Coach Hire Across Australia

Alice Springs Airport coach transfers and outback runs

Alice Springs Airport is about 15 km south of Todd Mall, so the transfer into town is short. The planning goes into what comes next: Uluru and Kings Canyon are a long way by coach.

Pick-up at a small terminal

Alice Springs names no coach pick-up point and no staging area. A vehicle may pause out front only with its driver present and passengers or luggage going in or out. There is no parking at the kerb; leave a vehicle and it gets a ticket. Short Term parking costs nothing for 10 minutes.

The airport lists coach charter and bus companies among its options for groups. The operator confirms the loading position for your flight.

In and around town

Todd Mall is 15 to 20 minutes away. The Desert Park charges nothing for coach parking; groups of ten plus should book via visitor services. The Telegraph Station is about 4 km north of town and Simpsons Gap about 25 minutes west.

Where the driver meets you

  • Alice Springs Airport does not publish a coach pick-up point; passengers can be dropped off and picked up in front of the terminal while the vehicle is attended and actively loading or unloading.

Where coaches wait

  • The airport does not publish a coach staging area; public parking at the terminal kerbside is strictly prohibited, and the Short Term Car Park is free for the first 10 minutes.

Drive to the CBD

  • about 15 km by road to Todd Mall, about 15-20 min in light traffic

Uluru and Kings Canyon

Uluru is about 468 km by road. A car takes about five hours; a coach takes longer, and most groups stay the night. On sealed roads Kings Canyon is about 474 km. The shorter Mereenie Loop is unsealed, 4WD only and needs a permit, so coaches take the sealed route: Stuart Highway, Lasseter Highway, then Luritja Road.

Parts of the Stuart Highway have a 130 km/h limit or open speed for cars, but coaches stay at 100 km/h. Timings built on car figures will be wrong. The NT has not adopted the Heavy Vehicle National Law fatigue rules; operators manage driver fatigue under NT work health and safety law.

Park passes and heat rules

Uluru-Kata Tjuta visitors each need a park pass, and a tour company must hold a permit from the Director of National Parks; allow at least 14 days for the application. A forecast of 36 degrees or hotter triggers two rules: Kings Canyon Rim walkers must be on the track before 9 am, and beyond Karu Lookout the Valley of the Winds track at Kata Tjuta closes from 11 am. Plan early starts.

Questions

Is there a shuttle into town?

Yes. An airport shuttle runs to the town centre, hotels, motels and hostels. Book it ahead.

Can the group climb Uluru?

No. The climb is permanently closed.

Do we need passes for the West MacDonnell Ranges?

Yes, unless you live in the Territory. Tjoritja / West MacDonnell and Watarrka (Kings Canyon) both need the NT Parks Visitor Pass.
