Coach Charter from Launceston
Launceston is the base for northern Tasmania: the Gorge in town, the Tamar Valley on the doorstep, and Cradle Mountain and Freycinet further out. Park rules and driver hours shape the long days.
Cataract Gorge without the car park
First Basin car park has 12 bays for oversized vehicles. On a busy day it is easier to walk the group in from the city over Kings Bridge, about 15 minutes, and have the coach collect them at the Basin later. The car park gates lock at 10pm, which matters for an evening function there.

Cradle Mountain and the shuttle
While the park shuttle is operating, no private vehicle goes beyond the Visitor Centre. Tour operators get just three Dove Lake spaces, first come, and need a shuttle escort in and out during shuttle hours. In busy periods the park asks operators to park at the Cradle Mountain Gateway instead and move the group onto the shuttle. In practice, plan for the shuttle. Each passenger needs a valid Tasmanian parks pass.
Cradle Mountain and Freycinet are each two hours or more from Launceston. A return trip to either fills a driver's day and must fit the Heavy Vehicle National Law work and rest limits, which apply in Tasmania.

Coach rules in Launceston
- Launceston Airport (LST) is on Evandale Main Road about 15 km south of the city (about 15-20 min), about 3 km from the Midland Highway.
- Spirit of Tasmania links Devonport (about 100 km, 1.25 h from Launceston) with Geelong on overnight crossings of roughly 9-11 h. There are no passenger sailings from 23 to 30 October 2026; the new Spirit of Tasmania IV and V start on 31 October 2026 with night sailings only at first, and the Devonport terminal moves to Spirit Quay, 112 Wright Street, East Devonport.
- Devonport terminal parking is limited and for passengers only; groups should arrange pick-up in advance. Group travel is booked through Spirit of Tasmania's group enquiries.
- Cradle Mountain: private vehicles may not drive past the Visitor Centre while the park shuttle runs, and campervans, caravans and trailers are never allowed on Dove Lake Road. Nature-based tour operators have 3 first-come parking spaces at Dove Lake and must enter and leave with a shuttle escort (or use the shuttle) during operating hours; in peak periods operators are asked to park at the Cradle Mountain Gateway and use the shuttle. Every visitor needs a valid Tasmanian parks pass.
- Cataract Gorge First Basin car park gates are locked at 10pm; walking from the city via Kings Bridge (about 15 min) avoids the car park at busy times.
- Long day trips (Cradle Mountain, Freycinet) must fit the driver's work and rest hours under the Heavy Vehicle National Law, which applies in Tasmania.
Flights and the ferry
Launceston Airport is about 15 km from the Town Hall, 15 to 20 minutes. Buses use the boom-gated Commercial Lane nearest the terminal, which reads the licence plate. The front kerb allows only a one-minute attended stop, and there is no published staging area.
The ferry from the mainland lands at Devonport, 75 minutes or so up the road. In late 2026 Spirit of Tasmania changes ships and moves its Devonport terminal to Spirit Quay, East Devonport. Terminal parking is for passengers only, so book the group pick-up in advance and check sailing times before you confirm.
Tamar Valley and lavender
The Tamar wine route follows both banks of the river. For a small group, a minibus or midi coach suits a string of cellar door stops. Bridestowe Lavender Estate at Nabowla is about 45 minutes north-east and flowers in December and January, so book early for those months.
Questions
Can we take a coach from Launceston to Hobart?
Yes: roughly 200 km down the Midland Highway, allowing 2.5 to 3 hours. It works well as a one-way transfer, with the flight home from Hobart.
Is Freycinet a day trip?
It can be. The Wineglass Bay lookout area is about 175 km away, around two and a half hours each way. Start early and keep the time on the ground realistic.
Is there a large venue for a conference?
The Albert Hall on Tamar Street takes up to about 1,100 people, with banquets of up to 520 in the Great Hall. The Princess Theatre on Brisbane Street seats about 940.
