Coach transfers at Hobart Airport (HBA)
Hobart Airport gives commercial vehicles their own lane, so a coach does not queue with private cars at the terminal. The city is about 20 minutes away across the Tasman Bridge.
The Commercial Lane
Coaches collect and set down in the Commercial Lane, a boom-gated lane apart from the public pick-up lane. The gate opens by access card or number-plate recognition, and access charges apply under the airport's terms for commercial vehicles. An operator new to the airport gets those requirements from its commercial team first. Every vehicle at the kerb must be attended.
Airport staff or security officers can ask a driver for driver accreditation or a current Tasmanian licence. It is a routine check that does not involve the group.

Timing without a holding area
Hobart publishes no coach staging area. The coach times its arrival to the flight, so send the flight number and a mobile for the group leader. Stragglers can use the airport express bus, which leaves from Gate 1 outside arrivals and takes about 30 minutes to the centre.
Where the driver meets you
- Commercial vehicles collect and drop off passengers in the airport's Commercial Lane, a boom-gated lane separate from the public pick-up/drop-off lane outside the terminal.
Where coaches wait
- Hobart Airport does not publish a coach staging area; commercial operators planning to start work at the airport email the airport's commercial team for the operating requirements that apply.
Drive to the CBD
- about 20 km by road to Franklin Square (the airport puts the city 17 km away), about 15-20 min on the dual-lane highway
Over the bridge
Franklin Square is about 20 km by road, though the airport gives the city as 17 km away. The dual carriageway and the Tasman Bridge get you there in 15 to 20 minutes. Tasmania has no toll roads. Most groups stay on the waterfront, at Salamanca or in the CBD.
First-day trips
Richmond is about 25 km from Hobart and an easy first stop. Port Arthur is about 95 km, some 1.5 hours. Every visitor to a national park needs a parks pass, and a commercial tour needs a Nature-Based Tourism licence holder. kunanyi / Mount Wellington is reached on a narrow, winding road with little parking at the top. Snow and ice close it at short notice, most often from April to September. Keep a fallback in the plan.
Questions
Can we get to MONA on arrival day?
Yes. By road it is about 11 km north of the city. Many groups go by ferry from Brooke Street Pier instead. The pier has a set-down zone right outside, so the coach drops there and collects later.
We come in on the Spirit of Tasmania. Can a coach meet us?
Yes. Devonport is about 3.5 hours north of Hobart by road. New Spirit of Tasmania ships, and a new Devonport terminal, arrive in late 2026. Confirm your sailing before the coach is booked.
Is the Bruny Island ferry bookable for a set time?
No. The ferry from Kettering takes about 20 minutes and runs often, but tickets are for the next available sailing. Build some slack into the day.
