Midi Coach Charter for Mid-Size Groups

Between the minibus and the full-size coach is the midi. It carries a mid-size group in proper coach seats with room for bags, and it reaches places a full-size vehicle finds awkward.

Who it suits

Midi coaches typically seat 25 to 35, with underfloor or rear luggage space that is smaller than a full coach's. They suit corporate shuttles, wedding guests, day tours and teams with staff. Seat numbers vary by vehicle; the quote gives the count.

The shorter body helps on hinterland roads. The Blackall Range roads between Maleny, Montville and Mapleton are narrow and winding, and the operator checks the route for full-size coaches there. For Mount Spec Road to Paluma, sources disagree on bus suitability, so the operator confirms the vehicle before booking.

At a glance

  • Seats: 25-35
  • Luggage: Underfloor or rear luggage space, smaller than a full coach

Typical features

  • Two-axle midi coach over 8 t GVM: MR licence; up to 8 t GVM: LR (light rigid) licence
  • Operators need bus accreditation: in NSW, Long Distance, Tourist or Charter (LDTC) accreditation; in Victoria, Safe Transport Victoria operator accreditation
  • HVNL fatigue rules cover buses over 4.5 t GVM built to carry more than 12 adults, including the driver
  • Under HVNL standard hours, a work diary is needed once the driver works beyond a 100 km radius of their base

Licences and accreditation

A two-axle midi over 8 t GVM needs a driver with an MR licence; lighter ones, up to 8 t, need LR. Operators need bus accreditation: in NSW, Long Distance, Tourist or Charter accreditation; in Victoria, accreditation from Safe Transport Victoria.

Long days in a midi

A midi coach is still a heavy vehicle for fatigue purposes. HVNL rules cover any bus over 4.5 t GVM built for more than 12 adults, counting the driver. Once the driver works beyond a 100 km radius of base, a work diary is required. In WA and the NT, the local fatigue scheme applies instead.

For a winery or day tour of 25 to 30 people, a midi coach often loses less time at every stop than a full coach: it fits smaller car parks and turns more easily at cellar doors and lookouts.

Questions

Is a midi coach the same as a minibus?

No. A minibus typically seats 13 to 24 with limited rear luggage space. A midi coach is larger, seats about 25 to 35 and has more room for bags.

Can a midi coach do airport runs?

Yes. Bag room is tighter than on a full-size coach, so include the case count with the booking.

Will a midi coach fit where a coach cannot?

Often, but not always. Height limits and road signs still apply, so the operator checks the route and each stop.
