Minibus Charter for Small Groups

A minibus is the right size for a team, a small tour group or a club outing. It is easier to park than a coach, but it has less room for bags, so pack light or size up.

Seats and bags

Minibuses typically seat 13 to 24. Luggage goes in a rear space that gets tight when every seat is taken, so a full minibus on an airport run may need to become a bigger vehicle. Tell the operator the number of cases, not only the passengers.

Small vehicles open some doors. At the Townsville stadium, buses of up to 22 seats may drop off and pick up inside the Dean Street car park without booking, while larger charter buses use a booked zone further out.

At a glance

  • Seats: 13-24
  • Luggage: Rear luggage space; limited with every seat taken

Typical features

  • A bus seating more than 12 adults, including the driver, with a GVM up to 8 t needs an LR (light rigid) licence
  • In Victoria, anyone operating a bus service with seating for 10 or more adults, including the driver, must be accredited
  • In Victoria only, HVNL fatigue rules also cover light buses of 4.5 t GVM or less that seat more than 12 adults
  • In Victoria, drivers of commercial and tour and charter bus services need driver accreditation from Safe Transport Victoria
  • NSW Bus Driver Authorities are valid for three years; drivers over 60 need an annual health assessment to renew

Licence, accreditation and state rules

An LR licence covers a bus of up to 8 t GVM seating more than 12 adults, driver included. In Victoria, any bus service with 10 or more adult seats including the driver needs an accredited operator, and drivers of commercial, tour and charter buses need accreditation from Safe Transport Victoria. NSW Bus Driver Authorities last three years.

Fatigue rules for smaller buses

Nationally, HVNL fatigue rules apply to buses over 4.5 t GVM. Victoria goes further: its version also covers lighter buses, 4.5 t GVM and under, when they seat more than 12 adults. So a minibus trip from Ballarat to the Grampians and back falls under the same hours rules as a coach. Other states differ, and Western Australia and the Northern Territory manage fatigue under their own laws.

Keep the day realistic either way: a long drive, several stops and a late return add up quickly for one driver.

Questions

Is a minibus enough for 20 people with luggage?

Sometimes. A full load of passengers leaves little room at the back. For an airport run with a case each, ask about a midi coach instead.

Can a minibus go where a coach cannot?

Often. It fits smaller car parks and tighter streets. Height limits and signed restrictions still apply, so the operator checks each stop.

What is the difference between a minibus and a Sprinter?

A Sprinter-type van typically seats 10 to 11 and can be driven on a car licence. A minibus seats about 13 to 24 and needs an LR licence.
