Coaches for Cruise Groups at Station Pier
Station Pier is a tram ride from the Melbourne CBD, but a coach cannot just roll onto the pier. Who may pass the Gatehouse, and on what paperwork, decides how the transfer works.
Inside or outside the Gatehouse
Arriving passengers all leave on foot via the Gatehouse, and Waterfront Place is where people meet them. A privately booked coach collects from the car park where the pier begins; the driver stays there, not on the pier, until the group walks up.
Setting down on the pier is harder. The cruise line has to approve the vehicle, and security at the Gatehouse inspects boarding papers before the coach goes any further. Ports Victoria also requires ground handlers and tour operators who work on the pier to hold a licence, issued per cruise season. Ask whether the operator quoting you holds one. If not, plan to meet and part at the entrance car park.

Turnaround mornings
Ports Victoria publishes each season of ship calls, and the 2026-27 list includes turnaround visits, when one set of passengers leaves and the next boards. Those mornings are the busiest. Parking near the pier is short-term, paid and scarce, and the pier has nowhere to leave luggage, so the coach needs to be ready when the bags come off.
The Tullamarine run uses CityLink, a cashless toll road. At the airport a coach needs a permit and waits only in its allocated zone.
Getting from the ship to the coach
- Station Pier takes most of the cruise ships that visit Victoria, with more than 300,000 passengers and crew a year.
- The 2026-27 Ports Victoria cruise schedule opens with a call on 11 October 2026 and includes turnaround visits, where passengers start or end their cruise in Melbourne.
- All arriving passengers leave Station Pier through the Gatehouse and can be met in Waterfront Place.
- Passengers with private pick-ups are collected in the car park at the entrance to Station Pier, and drivers must wait in the car park.
- Vehicles dropping off embarking passengers need approval from the cruise line; security at the Gatehouse checks boarding documents before letting them onto the pier.
- Tour operators and passenger ground handlers working on Station Pier need a Ports Victoria Ancillary Service Provider Licence for the cruise season.
- Public parking next to Station Pier is limited to paid short-term spaces in Waterfront Place, and there is no luggage storage on the pier.
- Tram route 109 runs to the Melbourne CBD from Stop 129 Beacon Cove, a short walk from Station Pier; SkyBus links Melbourne Airport with Southern Cross Station.
Nearest airports
- Melbourne Airport (Tullamarine) (MEL) — about 28 km, about 30-45 min depending on traffic
- Avalon Airport (AVV) — about 56 km, about 50-60 min
A few hours in the city
With a late flight, many groups spend the gap in the CBD. Council bus spaces there take a coach for less than a quarter of an hour while people get on or off. Longer layover is only outside the CBD, so plan a drop, a gap, and a return at a fixed time.
Passengers with light bags who split from the group can ride the 109 tram into the CBD from the Beacon Cove stop, a few minutes on foot from the pier.
Questions
Where exactly does the group meet the coach?
In the car park where Station Pier starts, unless the operator has approval to go onto the pier. Tell passengers to exit via the Gatehouse and look for the coach there.
Can one coach drop a boarding group and collect an arriving one?
Often, yes, on a turnaround day. The drop-off still needs the cruise line to approve the vehicle. Send both passenger lists and flight times so the operator can fit the two jobs together.
Which airport suits a cruise group better?
Tullamarine is closer: about 28 km, or 30 to 45 minutes. Avalon is about 56 km, 50 to 60 minutes. Let the flights decide; a charter runs from either.
