Coach Charter for Sydney's Two Cruise Terminals

A coach meeting a ship in Sydney gets two minutes at the kerb, whichever terminal the ship uses. Everything else in the plan follows from that.

Circular Quay: set down fast, collect where staff send you

When a ship is in, you cannot park at the Overseas Passenger Terminal, and there are no bays to wait in. Drop-offs are made on the lower roadway of Circular Quay West, which the coach reaches by turning off George Street at Argyle Street. Each stop is capped at two minutes, and the driver cannot leave the vehicle.

Two minutes is short for a full coach and its cases, so have the group at the door with bags tagged. When passengers come off the ship, ground staff take anyone booked on a coach to a dedicated pick-up point. Brief the group to follow staff, not search the street. Private pick-ups are not allowed on the Level 3 access from Hickson Road.

White Bay: one road in

White Bay has a single approach on ship days: James Craig Road, turning off The Crescent. Robert Street in Balmain is no use, as drivers sent that way are redirected. Kerbside, a vehicle gets two minutes; a short-stay collection in the car park can take 15. So the coach pulls in as the group clears the terminal, never before.

Send the ship name and sailing date with the quote request, and the operator confirms which terminal it uses.

Getting from the ship to the coach

  • There is no parking at the Overseas Passenger Terminal on cruise ship days, and there are no waiting bays for passenger pick-ups.
  • At the Overseas Passenger Terminal, ground staff direct passengers booked on coach or bus transfers to a dedicated pick-up point.
  • The Overseas Passenger Terminal drop-off area is on the lower roadway at Circular Quay West, reached from George Street at Argyle Street; stops are limited to two minutes and drivers may not leave the vehicle.
  • On Overseas Passenger Terminal mornings, the taxi rank for disembarking passengers is on Level 3, reached from Hickson Road; private pick-ups and drop-offs are not allowed on the Level 3 access.
  • On cruise ship days, vehicles reach White Bay Cruise Terminal only via James Craig Road from The Crescent; drivers who try Robert Street, Balmain are redirected.
  • White Bay Cruise Terminal has no long-term parking: its car park is for short-stay pick-ups of up to 15 minutes, and kerbside stops are limited to two minutes.
  • Disembarkation at the Overseas Passenger Terminal typically begins around 30 minutes after the ship arrives; the port asks departing passengers to arrive at least an hour before departure.
  • Circular Quay station, about 450 m from the Overseas Passenger Terminal, has direct trains to Sydney Airport.
  • Port Authority of NSW began berth works at the Overseas Passenger Terminal in May 2026, due to finish in late 2026, so that large ships such as Queen Mary 2 can berth on all tides.

Timing the airport leg

Passengers usually start leaving the ship about half an hour after it docks, and luggage takes longer. For an afternoon flight, a mid-morning collection leaves room for a slow disembarkation. On boarding day the port wants passengers at the terminal at least an hour before sailing; work back from that.

At Sydney Airport, registered coaches hold on Ross Smith Avenue, in the holding area the airport provides, and go to the terminal once the flight is down. Every Sydney toll road is cashless, and a full-size coach is charged as a heavy vehicle.

Questions

Can the coach wait at Circular Quay while we collect our bags?

No. There is nowhere to park or wait there on ship days. Accredited coaches can park at King Street Wharf, but nobody may get on or off there.

Is a coach worth it for a handful of passengers?

For six or eight people a Sprinter is simpler. Circular Quay station, about 450 m from the terminal, also has direct trains to the airport for anyone travelling light.

Can we fit in a city tour before a late flight?

Yes. Set down on George Street beside First Fleet Park for Circular Quay, or on Wheat Road, behind the aquarium, for Darling Harbour. Bags stay in the coach.
